At Streef Produce, we care about quality products and satisfied customers. We also care about our greater community as a whole – and we do what we can to support initiatives, causes and organizations with goals and values similar to our own.
We have been involved from Day One with an Ontario project called Fresh from the Farm. It is a program that allows students to raise funds for their school by selling bundles of fresh Ontario root vegetables and gift-boxes of fresh Ontario apples. The innovative school fundraising campaign serves to promote healthy eating to families while supporting Ontario farmers through the sale of Ontario produce.
Our role is to work closely with program organizers, the Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers’ Association and the Ontario government to procure produce and deliver it all to the right schools at the right time. Since 2013, almost 2,200 schools have participated in Fresh from the Farm. Collectively, the schools have distributed over 4.3 million pounds of fresh, local fruit and vegetables to Ontario families, generating a total of almost $5 million in local food sales across the province. We have partnerships with groups like Ontario Christian Gleaners and Mission to Haiti where we donate produce that can be used to help feed the hungry. For example, through Mission to Haiti we help distribute soup to children in that country, and we donate potatoes that might have blemishes or are otherwise unsuitable for market in Canada to the Gleaners to be used in making that soup.
We support the Outstanding Young Farmer Memorial Scholarship that was established in honour of Martin Streef, one of our founders, who passed away in 2008. The award is given annually as part of Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmer program and is meant to help a deserving recipient pursue his or her passion for agriculture.
